Nutrition for Learning

Nutrition for Learning Update -- September 2020

Welcome back to a new school year! Nutrition for Learning is gearing up to serve nutritious snacks to the students once again and we sure are excited! There will be some changes to accommodate for the new “normal” we all are living.

Every year NFL serves the students of our wonderful school around 7800 snacks per week as well as provide the high school with hot breakfast free of charge 5 days a week. Here’s a little about who we are and what we do for any new teachers or just as a reminder.

Nutrition for Learning was started many years ago, and in the beginning it was run by a small group of moms. Wow - how we have grown thanks to the support of the school, community, and teachers.  NFL now employs 2 Coordinators and a director and has countless volunteers and board members who keep the program running. We count on various grants and donations to fund our program, and donations are always welcome!

A bit about myself: I was born and raised in B.C. and moved here with my husband and 2 children 11 years ago. We love it here and enjoy the outdoors, horses and camping. I started as the Coordinator 2 years ago and really enjoy running the program and all it offers to the students.

Nutrition for Learning’s purpose is to provide children with the fundamental nutritional building blocks which will sustain their quality of life now and in the future. We do this by providing nutritious morning snacks 3 days per week. We hope to fuel all students to achieve their highest learning goals and thrive in the educational setting. NFL also supplies the office with bagged lunches for students who are unable to get a forgotten lunch brought in.

In past years our program has run in RVS Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Snack is delivered in bins to classroom doors between 8:30 and 10 am. I have also had the pleasure of having a snack helper class to assist with counting and delivering, not to mention countless valued volunteers as well. As we start this school year we will miss them greatly and hope to see them return as the year progresses!

While the threat of Covid-19 is still present we will be making some changes as per AHS guidelines:

Snack will run Monday and Thursday in September and Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays thereafter.

  • All snacks will be individually packaged
  • Students are NOT permitted to reach into bins, teachers MUST hand out the snacks to the students
  • Bins will be sanitized before each use
  • There will be no volunteers or students assisting in the preparation of snack
  • All preparation will be done according to AHS guidelines
